So You Wanna Be a Mentor?

So you think you want to become an Area52 Mentor? Are you sure? Ok, so you have a website. You have worked on it and struggled with it and tried to make it the best site you possible could. Maybe you got some help along the way from a friend or someone in a Mentor program, and now would like to give back some of what you received.

Or maybe you struggled along on your own, making mistake after mistake until you got things right and would like to help others so they don’t have to struggle as you did. Both of these are great reasons for becoming a Mentor.

But being a Mentor isn’t always easy. As you offer your help to people, you may receive hate mail, come across porn sites or sites that you find offensive. You may find yourself working on a committee of one (yourself) when there used to be three or four people in the committee. You may find you are putting in more hours than you ever intended to.

Still want to be an Area52 Mentor? Good, because we have a secret: we’re not like other Mentor programs. There are no musts and no requirements in Area52. You may contribute to the community and help site owners in any way you wish. You may put in a few minutes a week or a few hours, depending on your time and interest. And the best part is that you will become part of a community of caring, fun-loving people who will always be there to help and support you. We, the Mentors of Area52 are far more than co-workers, more even than friends: we are family.

Have we scared you away yet? We hope not! We want you to join. No matter what your area of expertise, or lack thereof, there is a place for you among us. We do ask a few things before you decide to become one of us, however:

You must have a website within the general theme of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and the Paranormal. This is a wide theme, and can cover a great many topics including but not limited to vampires, ghosts, aliens, UFOs, SF and Fantasy books, movies and TV shows, fan fiction, and role-playing games. Your site may be on any server on the web.

Your site must not contain any materials that are pornographic in nature (fantasy art sites are an exception to this). You must not have links to pornographic sites either. You also must not have any hacking, warez, or MP3 programs on your site, nor may you have links to such sites. In a nutshell, your site should comply with the Terms of Service (TOS) of most major webservers, including, of course, your own.

Your site should show that you have a basic grasp of HTML, as well as a basic grasp of grammar and spelling. It need not be a whiz-bang site, but it should show that you understand HTML well enough to help others with their sites. If your site is merely a PageMaker or WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) site, you need not apply. You must know some HTML to be a Mentor. Knowledge of tables, frames, graphics, forms, and java are a plus.

Still want to be an Area52 Mentor? Great! Just click here and fill out the application. Your application will be acknowledged within a day. The current Area52 Mentors will look over your application and, if accepted, you will be asked to take a short training course that will take you approximately 30 minutes to finish. Thank you for you interest, and good luck! We hope to have you as a part of our community very soon.
